From September 7 to October 13, 2023, an exhibition on the life of Ukrainians in the Hetmanate was held at Columbia University in New York. The exhibition featured the reproductions of 26 sketches depicting Empress Elizabeth’s official visit to Kyiv and to the estates of Count Oleksiy Rozumovsky, in the summer of 1744. The drawings can be traced back to a collection by Friedrich Bergholz, a collector who served as a tutor for Grand Duke Peter Fedorovich, the future Tsar Peter III. These artifacts are now housed in the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm. The sketches are among the earliest known ethnographic depictions of Ukrainian society in all its strata and diversity, which have never been publicly exhibited before.
